On the First Friday of each Month, Post 28 will have Bob McBride, the American Legion Department of Delaware VA Service officer here from 8 AM until Noon to help veterans and their families with any VA related matters.
In conjuction with the service office, Karen Marvel, a Social Security Advocate, will be here starting at 10 AM to answer any questions you may have about Social Security and she will also assist you in filing for any benefits online. Please note, Karen will not be available on 8/6/2010 to help members with Social Security but she will back on 9/3/2010.
Message from Karen Marvel
I would like everyone to know that Social Security has a special expediting service to assist Wounded Warriors when they file for Disability. You can obtain more information about this service by going directly to http://www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors/.
I have received a lot of questions recently about veterans receiving extra credit for military service which may increase their Social Security benefit. This is true but there are some misconceptions on how you get this credit. I am outlining the basic requirements below.
Under certain circumstances, special extra earnings for your military service from 1957 through 2001 can be credited to your record for Social Security purposes. These extra earnings credits may help you qualify for Social Security or increase the amount of your Social Security benefit.
Special extra earnings credits are granted for periods of active duty or active duty for training. Special extra earnings credits are not granted for inactive duty training.
If your active military service occurred
For a more detailed explanation on special extra earnings go to http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10017.html
Periodically, I will be posting a Social Security Column from Laurie Stuchlik, the District Manager of the local Social Security office in Georgetown DE.
It is so much easier to file online for Retirement & Disability online rather than going into your local office. There is no fee for this service.

Honor Guard Program

The Post 28 Honor Guard is a proud unit representing the Post. They perform various services for our veterans and for our community.
For the veterans they perform a graveside service including a 21 gun salute for all veterans and members of the American Legion.
This service is provided free of charge by our Honor Guard and it is provided regardless of the weather.
If a family is interested in having the Honor Guard perform a funeral service, a member of the family should have the funeral director contact the post or the Chairman of the Honor Guard directly and request that the service be performed.

For the community our Honor Guard visits several of the schools in the community and teaches flag etiquette to the children.
This course includes the proper displaying of the flag, when to display a flag and the proper folding of the flag.
The Honor Guard, representing various age groups from World War II to Vietnam is ready, willing and able to answer the many questions the children have.
This flag etiquette program is part of the American Legion's Americanism Program that teaches pride in being an American and proud of the nation's symbol.
The Honor Guard collects old flags and prepares them for a proper retirement.
If your church or social group would like to have the Honor Guard come to your organization and perform their Flag Etiquette Program, just call the Post (Commander) and someone from the Honor Guard will contact you and make arrangements.
